Mixing Of Bacteria And Sugar
Both tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease start with dental plaque. Plaque is a sticky colourless layer of bacteria that continuously forms on the teeth. It is formed from germs that normally live in the mouth, and is found in a healthy mouth under under normal conditions. Certain bacteria in the plaque change sugars (contained in the foods we eat) into acids. The acid attacks the enamel of the teeth, thus causing cavities and pain.
This combination of plaque and sugar also produces a poison which gradually destroys the fastening between the tooth and the jaw. It starts with a gum inflammation which is painless, and therefore can begin its destruction without one noticing. The disease has a long term effect and at the worst may lead to losing ones teeth.
